7 Nigerian Artists in Posession of the gift of Prophecy
The year 2020 is just in its second quarter and my word you must admit that plenty has happened already. Prophesy here, scientific calculations there, the turn of global events are really disheartening that you might not be aware of things coming to pass right under your nose. Some of these prophesies weren’t uttered by the usual foretellers and because their kind of messages are always passed with a groove and a beat, many might not take them serious until they are hit with that nostalgic feeling of reality. In this post we will be looking at Nigerian artists in possession of the gift of prophecy.
Tiwa Savage
The adorable singer has been around the music scene for a long while hitting it big with de crème de la crème of the industry. In 2019 she released her single, 49-99 which I must say is full of cryptic messages from the song title to various clips in the video. If you don’t believe, the O-trek series in February 2020, when the Lagos state government banned the use of certain vehicles must be fresh in memory of Lagosians with Tiwa’s soft voice filtering through, “...waiting for danfo, waiting for uber and okada”, became the order of the day and all the BRT buses including the ultra modern ones were all affected by the 49 sitting 99standing syndrome. Still in sassy fashion she foretold another,”...what’s a nation with no army”. True, with the way the Nigerian army is being decimated by terror groups, police protection is only available to those who can pay for it, one can only pray that this doesn’t happen something is done to the killing of the men who pledged their lives to serve their country. You’ll definitely agree, Tiwa indeed is a Savage prophetess.
Patoranking
The talented Nigerian singer might be shocked to see himself on this list but a throwback to his 2016 hit song No Kissing Babe would surely joggle his mind. The outbreak of the Covid-19 virus has led to global social distancing by the earth’s populace with lock downs imposed on major cities of the world and even couples aren’t left out. For a disease that has no cure yet, everyone is suspicious of the other regardless of the relationship status. Patoranking’s No Kissing Babe, No touching..., has been certified by the World Health Organisation as a major way to prevent the spread of the dreaded disease. If you still don’t believe Patoranking, ‘holler’ at Davido as he goes into self isolation as he and his fiancée battles against the dreaded virus.
Wizkid
The next name that comes to mind after you hear Tiwa Savage is none other than Star Boy Wizkid. Well it took some time but here's the Come closer hit maker. Often criticized for having low content in his songs, you would definitely agree his success is synonymous to his high standards of giving his fans what they love, good vibes and a little Celeb controversy. I admire Wizkid a lot because of his beginnings. Almost everything he is now was foretold in his first album, Superstar. From his music travelling with no visa, small boy 'to ti di olowo' and his song Oluwa loni, Wizkid was in reality singing out what he wants to become in life. You too can do same, speak those things you want to life while you work towards achieving them and no matter the obstacle stay positive.
Burna Boy
Here comes the African Giant moving to silky Afro beat vibes that has got the world dancing to his groove when all of a sudden he lets out a cry, “I suppose win Awardee, Lordy” and then continues to move in classic gyration as dishes out the rest of his track. No one knew how lofty this award was until the year 2020. Nigeria’s Burna Boy was nominated for the prestigious Grammy Awards and what a strong contender he really was. It took the legendary Angelique Kidjo (recipient of the award) to dedicate her award to him with a lot of music lovers around the world believing that Burna boy deserved the award to make me realise that Burna had already visualised that moment in his career. Well, till he finally gets the reward that he deserves, please get Mr 2kay out of the way because Burna Boy is going to be “killing dem” with good vibes of course or what were you thinking , he’s got Zlatan Ibile with the zanku moves too.
Eedris Abdulkareem
Following the harsh response from the president of Nigeria in 2004 to the song Jaga Jaga, Eedris earned his place as Nigeria’s most controversial rap artist and in fairness to Mr President Nigeria was then still a haven of peace comparatively. There was no insecurity, no insurgency and corruption was still budding. Fast forward 2020, Eedris musical work in 2004 has been fully vindicated because the “Jaga” in Nigeria is truly raised to the power of two. Like a disciple of Jesus he could have been martyred after being noticed and confronted by the highest political power in the country but the force of truth propelled him to deliver a rap classic and deservedly he earns his spot as a Nigerian musical prophet
2Baba
Perhaps our case study is Nigerian artists with the gift of prophecy here’s one who truly can be called a seer and none other than our beloved 2baba. Regarded as the father of Nigerian contemporary music because of his exploits internationally and locally, 2baba has the gift of seeing things through the eyes. Listen to his track in your eyes especially the outro, Ï see more bombing, more killing...I see Christians and Muslims praying...” True to his words it seems like Boko Haram have run low on bombs but Herds men are there to continue the killing. The divide that exists in the Nigerian population is so wide especially in the north where before you are regarded as a human being you are either Christian or Muslim. Slowly we are getting to that time where have seen enough and all regardless of faith will have no choice than to sue for peace.
Fela Anikulapo Kuti
No Nigerian artist from his era still commands the popularity he does locally and internationally, Fela was truly a work of art. Back in 2010, I had a neighbour off campus that would always blast his music on his stereo and I would listen to his lyrics, Looku Yarádua... I say looku Yarádua” sang Fela to the tune of his band. You would almost immediately think the song was released the previous month specially to troll Nigeria’s current president at the time and his God father only to realize that Fela has been long dead before the duo ascended to power leaving behind a concoction of his music which was still very potent. Fela's music addresses the greed that has engulfed the politics in Nigeria and the state of hopeless hopelessness that has befallen the people of his beloved country.
